The inspector checks to see if the work matches the approved plan(s), permit description(s), and meets the requirements of the building code(s). The inspection ends with either a list of corrections or an approval to continue to the next phase of construction or a final of the permit(s).

In addition to conducting mandatory inspections every five years under Local Law 11, building owners are required to submit detailed inspection reports to the DOB. These reports must include a comprehensive assessment of the building's exterior walls, identifying any unsafe conditions or necessary repairs.

The process begins as soon as high school. Individuals then complete a building inspector training program at a technical school or junior college. Graduates advance their knowledge and skills with on-the-job experience. Finally, professionals earn a building inspector license or certification.
